History of Vinland
Vinland was first known as Coal Creek when settled in 1854 but later became known as Vinland after some local vineyards, according to the Lawrence Journal-World. It is the home of Kansas’ first public library, opened in 1859, and for good reason: townsfolk wanted “to prevent dancing from becoming the only amusement in the community.” Vinland saw a sawmill open in 1857 and its first school in 1858. In the 1870s, a cheese factory came to town.
Vinland is now home to a number of families who care about the community and invest a lot of love and time into the fair. Many families are lifelong residents of the area, and many farm the local land.
